Drone IMU Calibration Failing? Here's a 5-Step Fix

IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) calibration before takeoff is essential for stable flight. But many pilots run into calibration that gets stuck, a progress bar that won't budge, or repeated failure messages. If you're facing this issue too, work through the steps below one by one.

1. Pay Close Attention to the Orientation Diagram in the App

During calibration, once progress reaches around 95%, the DJI Fly app usually displays a diagram showing the next orientation to move the drone into. Here's a detail that's easy to miss: follow the diagram itself, not just the text instructions — the wording can sometimes be misleading, while the diagram gives you the clearest, most accurate guidance.

2. What If the App Doesn't Prompt an Orientation Change?

If the app doesn't show the next step, try manually rotating the drone through each of the following positions, checking after each one to see if the progress updates:

  • Level, resting flat (belly down)
  • Tilted onto its left side
  • Tilted onto its right side
  • Upside down (top facing down)
  • Nose down, standing vertically

3. Do a Full Restart

Sometimes a stuck calibration is just a minor software or connection glitch. Try this "triple restart":

  • Power off the drone completely
  • Fully close the DJI Fly app (not just running in the background)
  • Restart your phone or remote controller
  • Power everything back on and attempt calibration again

4. Optimize Your Calibration Environment

External conditions affect IMU calibration more than you might expect. Before calibrating, check the following:

  • Battery charge is at least 50%
  • You're on a flat, clean surface
  • You're away from metal objects and other electronic devices, which can cause magnetic or signal interference
  • The drone stays completely still during calibration — avoid touching it

5. Still Not Working?

If the issue persists after trying all of the above, you can also try:

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the DJI Fly app
  • Using a different phone or tablet

IMU calibration issues are often not a hardware failure, but rather unclear on-screen prompts, an incorrect step order, or environmental interference. Working through the steps above resolves most cases. If the problem still persists after trying everything, it's worth reaching out to official support for further diagnosis — a hardware issue with the sensor itself can't be ruled out.
