DJI Neo VS DJI Neo 2: How to choose?
When DJI Neo was first released, it truly showed what a “pocket drone” could be. The drone is about the size of a human palm and weighs only 135 grams. It can take off directly from your hand, automatically follow you, and record smooth 4K video at the same time.
Best of all, it requires almost no learning at all. Because of this, DJI Neo quickly became a popular choice among travelers and first-time drone users.
About a year later, DJI introduced an upgraded version: DJI Neo 2. This new model is smarter and delivers a major performance boost. It is said to include many features that the original Neo did not have. In this article, we will take a closer look at what has been upgraded in Neo 2 and what new features it brings.

At first glance, the two drones look almost the same. The overall design is largely unchanged, with the main visual difference being the color. However, a closer look reveals that Neo 2 includes more thoughtful and innovative changes in the details.
Slight changes in size and weight
- The Neo measures 130 x 157 x 48.5 mm and weighs 135 g.
- The Neo 2 measures 147 x 171 x 41 mm and weighs 151 g.
However, the Neo 2 can also be equipped with a separate transceiver, located at the rear of the fuselage. In this case, its dimensions are 167 x 171 x 54 mm and it weighs 160 g. Adding the transceiver allows the drone to fly further, provide more stable footage, and enhance safety.
Incidentally, when operating the drone using a remote controller or goggles, please install the DJI Neo 2 digital transceiver for stable, low-latency video transmission.
If you are only using the handheld mode, remove the DJI Neo 2 digital transceiver to reduce aircraft weight and extend flight time.
Redesigned button layout
Neo 2 also introduces a new button layout. DJI redesigned the controls by placing three physical buttons—for power, mode selection, and takeoff/landing—under the right propeller arm.
In comparison, the original Neo only had two buttons on the top of the body.
This new layout makes key controls easier to reach, although some users feel that the buttons are placed a bit too close together.
New front-facing status display
Another visible upgrade is a small front-facing status screen next to the camera on Neo 2. This screen clearly shows battery level, flight mode, and connection status, making it much easier to check key information without opening the app.
Major storage upgrade
Internal storage is another practical improvement. DJI Neo 2 more than doubles the storage capacity, increasing it from 22GB on the original Neo to 49GB. This is a very useful upgrade because neither drone supports a microSD card. With the increased storage, users can record longer videos without constantly worrying about running out of space.

Improved Wi-Fi transmission
When connected to a smartphone, Neo 2 significantly improves Wi-Fi video transmission range. The maximum range increases from 50 meters on the original Neo to 500 meters on Neo 2, a full tenfold improvement.
Even in less ideal environments with more interference, this upgrade makes a noticeable difference and greatly improves usability.
New control methods

The original Neo does not support gesture control or landing back on your palm. It only offers voice control.
Neo 2 builds on voice control and adds gesture control and palm return as new interaction options.
With Neo 2, you can control the drone using simple hand movements. For example, when your palm is facing the drone, moving your hand left or right will move the drone in that direction. If you raise both palms toward the drone and move your hands apart, the drone will fly farther away. Bringing your hands closer together will cause the drone to move closer to you.
Difference in O4 video transmission implementation
There is one more important difference between the two models. The original Neo has O4 video transmission built directly into the drone. In contrast, Neo 2 requires a separate digital transceiver module to unlock O4 transmission. Although an extra step is added, this does not change the transmission distance.

In terms of flight performance, Neo 2 is significantly more powerful than the original Neo, delivering clear improvements across the board.
The first-generation Neo has a wind resistance rating of Level 4, while Neo 2 improves this to Level 5. This upgrade is largely due to Neo 2’s increased body weight, which helps it stay more stable in windy conditions. While it is not designed to compete with industrial-grade drones, it is worth noting that the DJI Mini 4 Pro has a wind resistance of 10.7 m/s, and Neo 2 is able to match this level, which is a meaningful advantage in real-world use.
Faster flight speeds
The DJI Neo 2 is also faster than its predecessor, the Neo. In normal mode, its speed is 8 m/s (compared to 6 m/s for the Neo), and in sport mode, it reaches 12 m/s (compared to 8 m/s for the Neo), a significant difference in both cases. Climbing and descending speeds have also seen a substantial improvement, and its superior performance is definitely noticeable in practical use.
Improved tracking performance
The most important upgrade may be tracking speed. Neo 2 can track subjects at speeds of up to 12 m/s, while the original Neo is limited to 8 m/s.
For users who want to film cycling, skiing, or fast running, this improvement makes a real difference and strongly affects how usable the tracking feature is in dynamic situations.

Photo and video modes
Both drones cover the core shooting features that most users will need in everyday scenarios:
- Single Shot: capture a photo instantly using the DJI Fly app or simple gestures.
- Interval Shooting: take photos at set intervals, ideal for timelapses or documenting a trip.

Obstacle detection and avoidance
This is one of the most significant differences between DJI Neo and Neo 2.
The original Neo relies only on a downward-facing optical sensor, which is used for stable hovering and positioning near the ground. It does not actively detect obstacles around the drone, meaning it has no true obstacle avoidance capability.
Neo 2 takes a major step forward by introducing full omnidirectional obstacle detection, allowing the drone to sense its surroundings in all directions and automatically adjust its flight path when obstacles are detected.
This system is built on two key hardware upgrades:
- a panoramic monocular vision camera, covering the sides and rear of the drone.
- a front-facing LiDAR sensor, designed for precise detection of obstacles directly ahead.
The downward infrared sensor remains in place, but it is still dedicated to low-altitude stability rather than obstacle avoidance itself.
Based on real-world user feedback, Neo 2’s avoidance system performs extremely well, even when dealing with thin or complex obstacles such as tree branches. Flight path adjustments feel smooth and natural, making automated flight far more confident and stress-free, especially in challenging environments.

Camera and image quality comparison
Because the original Neo uses a single-axis gimbal, it only stabilizes vertical (pitch) movement. When flying in windy conditions, most side-to-side shake has to be corrected using electronic image stabilization, which can reduce image quality.
Neo 2 upgrades to a dual-axis gimbal, providing physical stabilization on both the vertical and horizontal axes. This results in smoother footage, less image cropping, higher overall video quality, and much stronger performance in action scenes and subject tracking.
Sensor and lens differences
The two drones use a similar image sensor, so there is no major difference in base image quality. However, Neo 2 makes small improvements in aperture and equivalent focal length.
Neo 2 features an f/2.2 aperture, compared to f/2.8 on the original Neo, allowing slightly more light to enter the sensor. In real-world use, the difference is subtle and may be difficult to notice with the naked eye, but it does offer a small advantage in low-light conditions.
Video resolution and frame rates
Video performance sees a more noticeable upgrade. Neo 2 supports 4K video at up to 100fps, while the original Neo is limited to 4K at 30fps. This makes Neo 2 far better suited for slow-motion footage and fast-moving subjects.
