But the arrival of the DJI Mini 5 Pro is starting to blur that line — making many pilots rethink the traditional trade-off between portability and performance.

Based on the design specifications listed above, the two drones don’t look dramatically different in terms of physical design. However, their flight performance still shows some clear differences.

The DJI Mini 5 Pro has a top speed of 18 m/s, while the DJI Air 3S can reach up to 21 m/s. Thanks to its more powerful motors, the Air 3S is noticeably faster in real-world flying. Both drones share the same maximum climb speed, but the Air 3S still has the edge when descending, with a maximum descent speed of 10 m/s compared to 6 m/s on the Mini 5 Pro.

Wind performance is where things get especially interesting. On paper, both drones are rated for the same maximum wind resistance of 12 m/s (Level 6). This may seem surprising, considering the Air 3S weighs nearly three times as much as the Mini 5 Pro.

In real-world use, however, their behavior in wind is very different. We tested both drones in winds around 7 m/s, and under these conditions, the Mini 5 Pro had to work much harder to stay stable. The Air 3S handled the wind more easily, resulting in smoother footage and better overall flight stability. This also impacts battery life—just as mentioned in our endurance tests, even with the Plus battery, the Mini 5 Pro still can’t match the Air 3S in windy conditions.

Looking at the battery specs alone, it’s clear that the DJI Air 3S has a larger battery and stronger overall endurance. However, according to DJI’s official specifications, the DJI Mini 5 Pro appears to offer longer flight time when equipped with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus. But does that advantage hold up in real-world use?

In theory, the Mini 5 Pro does offer longer battery life. In real-world testing, when hovering in calm, wind-free conditions, the Mini 5 Pro equipped with the Intelligent Flight Battery Plus is able to stay in the air longer.

However, in typical flying conditions with wind, the Mini 5 Pro still falls short of the Air 3S in terms of endurance. Because of its lighter body, the Mini 5 Pro has to work harder to maintain flight stability. As a result, once wind is introduced and both drones are flying at the same speed, the Air 3S consistently delivers longer flight times than the Mini 5 Pro.

The Mini Pro series shares the same gimbal design, which allows free rotation along the roll axis. On the Mini 5 Pro, the gimbal can rotate up to 225°, enabling unique rotation effects that were previously difficult or impossible to achieve. Compared to the more traditional gimbal design on the Air 3S, this setup offers significantly more creative flexibility.

By comparison, the DJI Mini 5 Pro can record true vertical 4K video, thanks to its vertically tilting gimbal. This is a major advantage for content creators, as it allows you to capture vertical footage without cropping in post-production. The DJI Air 3S, in contrast, can only shoot horizontally and then crop the image for vertical output. As a result, vertical video on the Air 3S is limited to 2.7K at up to 60fps.

Sensor and Resolution

The DJI Air 3S is equipped with two separate sensors: a 1-inch main sensor with a 24mm focal length, and a 1/1.3-inch telephoto sensor with a 70mm focal length. This dual-camera system allows users to change perspectives without sacrificing image quality, making it easier to achieve tighter framing and cinematic compression.

The DJI Mini 5 Pro, on the other hand, uses a single 1-inch sensor with a 24mm focal length, but it supports 2× optical-quality zoom, equivalent to 48mm. While this digitally assisted zoom results in minimal quality loss, it still cannot fully match the performance and flexibility of the Air 3S’s dedicated 70mm telephoto lens.

In terms of resolution, both drones offer the same specifications: 4K video at up to 120fps, 1080p at up to 240fps, and still photos up to 50MP.

Overall, when it comes to camera performance, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is better suited for shooting short-form vertical videos for platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels. If short-form content isn’t your main focus, the Air 3S is the more compelling choice, thanks to its dual-camera system that offers greater versatility.

Conclusion: Which Drone Should You Choose?

Both the DJI Mini 5 Pro and the DJI Air 3S are beginner-friendly drones, and as of today, they stand out as leaders in their respective categories. They offer a strong balance of performance, portability, thoughtful design, and excellent image quality.

That said, pricing is where the Mini 5 Pro clearly pulls ahead. Across all available bundles, the Mini 5 Pro is significantly more affordable than the Air 3S. From a value-for-money perspective, it is the more cost-effective choice in this comparison.

Who to Choose

If you travel frequently and want a lightweight, easy-to-carry drone that still delivers strong photo and video quality, the DJI Mini 5 Pro is the better fit.
If wind resistance, flight stability, and reliability for professional work are higher priorities—and you need a drone that performs consistently in more demanding conditions—then the DJI Air 3S is the better option.
