Can an Open Box DJI Product Still Get DJI Care Refresh?
If you're browsing RenewDrone for an unactivated Open Box DJI product (the box has been opened, but the unit itself has never been powered on), you've probably wondered: can this still be covered by DJI Care Refresh? As a platform focused entirely on DJI gear, we get this question a lot — so we wanted to lay it all out in one place: where DJI Care Refresh purchases currently stand in the US, what DJI's official eligibility rules actually say, and exactly what our own Open Box and Like New grading — and warranty — do and don't cover.
1. The Important Part First: DJI Care Refresh Currently Can't Be Purchased in the US
Before getting into whether an Open Box product would qualify, there's a more basic fact worth stating plainly: DJI Care Refresh cannot currently be purchased in the United States.
According to DJI's own Care Refresh support page, the list of regions where the plan is currently available includes Canada, EU countries, the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan — the United States is not on that list. In practical terms, that means whether a product is brand new and unactivated or one of our Open Box units, if your account or shipping region is set to the US, DJI's own store simply won't show a DJI Care Refresh purchase option.
We're still going to walk through DJI's official eligibility rules below (unactivated status, the 48-hour/30-day activation windows, and so on), because they reflect how DJI Care Refresh generally works in the regions where it is available, and understanding them is still useful context. But we want to be upfront with every US customer: right now, you shouldn't base a purchase decision on the expectation that you'll be able to add DJI Care Refresh afterward, because there's currently no purchase path for US buyers at all.
2. DJI's Official Eligibility Rules — And Where an Open Box Product Fits In
Setting aside the current US availability issue, DJI's rules for a first-time purchase of DJI Care Refresh, in regions where it's sold, require the product to meet one of the following:
- Brand new and unactivated;
- Aircraft activated within the last 48 hours;
- Osmo / Ronin handheld products activated within the last 30 days.
Under this rule, an Open Box product is actually in the best possible position: because it has never been activated, it falls into the exact same eligibility tier as a brand-new, unactivated unit — no extra verification needed. A Like New product, on the other hand, has already been activated and used, so in a region where DJI Care Refresh is purchasable, it would need to clear one of DJI's fallback conditions instead:
- Video Verification: record and submit a verification video following DJI's guidelines; once approved, you'll have 72 hours from the purchase notice to buy and bind the plan;
- Online Repair Request: send the product back to DJI for inspection; once it passes, you again have 72 hours to purchase.
A few more details worth knowing, whether you're purchasing in a supported region now or planning ahead for if US availability returns:
- DJI Care Refresh must be purchased and bound in the same country/region as the product itself;
- Renewal only applies to the 1-Year Plan, and requires that your existing DJI Care Refresh is still valid or expired within the last 15 days;
- Flyaway Coverage is only available on select models, and requires the aircraft and remote controller to be bound to your DJI account in advance.
3. Who We Are: RenewDrone Focuses on the DJI Open Box and Pre-Owned Market
Since DJI Care Refresh currently isn't purchasable in the US, we'd rather be clear about what we can actually offer than let anyone assume they'll be able to add a protection plan that isn't available.
Here's what RenewDrone is built around:
- DJI, exclusively: we only sell DJI drones and handheld devices — think Osmo action cameras, pocket gimbal cameras, and the Mini/Air/Mavic drone lineups;
- Transparent, published grading standards: our website shows exactly how our team distinguishes Open Box from Like New, including the inspection process itself, so you know precisely what condition a unit is in before you buy — not a vague "like-new" claim;
- A 1-year warranty: every unit we sell comes with a 1-year warranty covering manufacturing or product defects — in other words, issues with the product itself.
There's one thing we want every customer to understand clearly: our 1-year warranty is not a substitute for DJI Care Refresh. DJI Care Refresh is a replacement/insurance-style plan that covers accidental damage — crashes, water damage, flyaways. Our warranty is a standard product-quality warranty: it guarantees the unit itself is free of defects. Accidental damage that happens during use — a crash, dropping it in water — generally falls outside what a product warranty covers. We'd rather say that plainly than leave it ambiguous.
4. Open Box vs. Like New: How We Grade Our Inventory
We sort every unit we sell into one of two grades:
Open Box (Unactivated)
- The unit has never been activated or used — only the original packaging has been opened;
- All accessories included, fully functional;
- Because it's never been activated, this is the tier that would line up with DJI's "brand new and unactivated" eligibility criteria if DJI Care Refresh purchases return to the US — no extra verification step required.
Like New (Activated, Lightly Used)
- The drone has been activated and used, but the battery has 3 or fewer charge cycles;
- Cosmetically and functionally, it holds up to a "like-new" standard;
- Because it's already been activated, qualifying for DJI Care Refresh in a supported region would generally require going through Video Verification or an Online Repair Request first.
The short version: Open Box lines up with DJI's "unactivated" tier, while Like New means lightly used but already activated. Both can look essentially brand new, but activation status is the one factor that actually determines DJI Care Refresh eligibility. You'll find the specific grade listed on every product page on our site — it's worth a quick check before you buy.
The Bottom Line
Right now, the answer to "can an Open Box DJI product get DJI Care Refresh" is straightforward: not yet, because DJI Care Refresh has no purchase path in the US at the moment. That's exactly why we wanted to write this — rather than let anyone assume they can add DJI Care Refresh down the line, we'd rather be upfront about what we do offer: clearly defined grading, a transparent inspection process, and a 1-year warranty covering product defects. If you're shopping for an Open Box or Like New DJI unit, take a look at what we currently have in stock — and if anything in this post raises a question, we're happy to help you sort it out before you buy.
